Brooklyn School has undertaken a review of the Draft New Zealand Curriculum (2006). The review explored the suggested requirements of the new curriculum. The key aspects of the CHaOS model were aligned with the new curriculum structure with a particular focus on the degree to which the CHaOS model addresses the key competencies and the vision of the new curriculum. The results of the review process are reflected in the following PowerPoint presentation.
Evolving a school curriculum is a complex task involving multiple school development initiatives, often taking place at the same time. From time to time, therefore, it is important to evaluate progress that is being made towards the overall goal.
To help with the evaluation process we have created the CHaOS success wheel. Teachers rate their confidence, skills and knowledge in implementing each of the aspects of the CHaOS model. The ratings are then averaged for each of the aspects of the model and represented on a spider graph. This data is used to pinpoint areas in which extra effort is required. A spreadsheet is used as a tool for analysing the data and presenting the results.
Planning learning is different in the CHaOS model than traditional approaches to planning. As a result the forms used to record plans are also different from traditional planning templates.
We have been trialing various formats and have yet to decide on a final planning template for the school. The images below represent our latest thinking in terms of a planning template for the CHaOS model. The idea is that the A3 sheets are filled in as the plan for a theme is negotiated with students. The sheets are then pinned to the classroom wall as a point of reference for the class as the theme is implemented.

How ICT is integrated into the CHaOS model. It includes information on the relative emphasis that is placed on each of the domains of learning through ICT at different levels in the school.
How self managed learning is implemented through the CHaOS model. It includes information on the awakening, practising and being dimensions of self managed learning.
How the model is structured. It includes information on the model's foundation, framing pillars, linking pillars and how the model is implemented across the school.
How the thinking strategies are developed through the CHaOS model. It includes information on self evaluating, predicting, justifying, checking, comparing, organising, contrasting, and synthesising thoughts.
